Lover's Day 2010

I'm a romantic. I absolutely am. I love being in love. I love everything that comes with it...impromptu kisses, cozy nights, slow dances...even serenades (as off pitch as things may get the honest, shameless affection behind those words will always make me blush).

So don't get me wrong. I think Valentines Day is a wonderful "feel good" day. It's a day to celebrate that someone special in your life...to make them feel extra special. But something about it is unappealing to me. A premeditated day that lacks authenticity- sign me up!
The flowers, candy, jewelry and not to mention the always dreaded, over priced and over crowded Valentines dinner out that is more of a hassle than a pleasure...all of it is so planned...and so expected.

I've never had a bad Valentines Day experience, so none of this revolves around an underlying bitterness towards the holiday. I just don' think that it's right for someone to feel pressured to do something romantic for the one that they love, just because everyone else is doing it. I think it's bullshit. Do it when it feels good...when it feels right. Make it authentic.

My sweetheart and I decided to make this Valentines Day easy and enjoyable. No flowers, no candy...just us. Bloody Mary's in the morning. Olympics in the afternoon. And a nice steak dinner, at home, to cap off the night. All of this which allows us to enjoy each other as much as possible...and isn't that the whole point of the day?

I know that this is just my style and I'm not speaking for all women. Flowers are a beautiful symbol of love. Jewelry is always a sure winner with the ladies. And chocolates are a wonderful excuse to indulge...I mean, you're sweetie bought them for you, so it's only polite to eat the entire box, right? I get it.

Celebrate however you'd like and do whatever makes you and the special people in your life feel adored. Whether it be cheesy and expected, offhand and spontaneous, or just a quiet day at home- make it meaningful.

And with all of this being said, my sweetheart just surprised me with a Valentines Day card...with puppies on it, no less. He never gets me cards and I giggled like a little girl. I guess there's a Valentines Day sucker in all of us.

Happy day to all of you lovers!
